Festival Eligibility Policy

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tom Hallaq @ 5:41 pm

As discussed at the news division meeting in 2010, the festival committee has asked the division to formulate eligibility requirements for student and faculty entries. Specifically, the question pertains to what constitutes “broadcasting.” Does it mean the entry must be published to the Internet, presented to some other audience, or if there should be no “presentation” requirement at all. Vic Costello, festival chair confirmed this is a matter that should be decided by the division membership. The deadline for submitting the division’s formal eligibility requirement to the festival committee is in June. Therefore, we would like to discuss and resolve this matter at the news division at 9:15am, Tuesday, April 12.

The discussion of this issue at our business meeting last year was spirited but necessarily short. You are receiving this memo because you made some valuable contributions to the debate that need to be considered by all members of the news division. Please summarize your position in one or two concise sentences and email your argument to me by Friday, April 8 at sybril.bennett@belmont.edu. I would appreciate it if Peter Casella would then outline the options for the members and facilitate a vote to be taken at the meeting. If the proposal is adopted, it will be submitted to the festival committee. If it is rejected, we will solicit further input and offer an amended proposal and second vote. The process will be repeated until the membership adopts an acceptable presentation eligibility requirement.

With gratitude to Peter Casella for leading the charge on this,

Sybril Bennett

BEA News Division Business

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tom Hallaq @ 8:51 pm

Hello Everyone:

Our annual convention is less than a week away and I wanted to let you know about a few issues we will discuss at our division meeting on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at 9:15am. Please plan to attend.

1. Several members are working on a proposal to address the “what constitutes a broadcast” Festival issue.

2. Bob Papper is asking the News Division to consider: making Electronic News not only the official journal of the RTVJ Division of AEJMC but also the official journal of the BEA News Division. The idea would be wider distribution of the journal … and, hopefully, more submissions and interest. Because there’s so much overlap of membership between the two divisions, Bob came up with what appears to be a workable plan.

Right now, AEJMC RTVJ members pay $18/year (as part of their dues) to get the journal. It seemed to Bob, if all the members of AEJMC RTVJ and BEA News paid $9/year for the journal, Sage would get the same amount of money and no one would pay more than $18/year (which is what they’re paying now). Some people would pay less ($9/year) if they were only members of one organization, but I don’t think Sage would care.

We will vote on both items at the meeting.

Below is a tentative agenda. Please let me know if you have other items for discussion. Thanks!

Peace,
Sybril
